WHAT IS A DISCOUNT DENTAL PLAN?

Discount plans provide access to a network of dentists and specialists across the country who have contracted with Careington to provide our members a discount off their normal fees. Members pay a small monthly fee (or a discounted annual fee) for access to participating providers who have contracted with us to provide our members a great savings.

Maintaining Your Oral Health

We all know that a proper diet is essential in maintaining our overall health. And we know that that goes for our teeth as well; we avoid excessive sweets to cut down on sugar damage to our smiles. But there’s more knowledge needed to keep our teeth healthy and shielded from certain, harmful foods. Here’s a helpful primer to shape your diet and keep your oral health in check.

Get Plenty of Calcium.  Your mom wasn’t kidding when she told you to drink milk for your teeth and bones. Calcium, which can be found in abundance in milk and dairy products, is a major building block of healthy teeth. Not only can calcium strengthen the formation and structure of our teeth when we’re young – it also helps keep them up well into adulthood. When our bodies lack calcium, they harvest it from our bones and teeth, often resulting in weakening and decay. So drink your milk!

Soak up Vitamin C.  Vitamin C is essential in our bodies’ ability to fight off various infections. Studies have shown that dental patients with diets low in Vitamin C are more prone to gingivitis – a harmful gum disease that can damage both your mouth and your overall health. To avoid swelling, bleeding gums, as well as the whole-body problems that can stem from gingivitis, load up on Vitamin C. Luckily, it’s readily available in delicious fruits like oranges, tangerines, and kiwi. No excuses!

Limit Your Intake of Sugary Snacks.  You know that sugar is the main dietary enemy of your teeth, so I won’t belabor the point. But pay close attention to just how much sugar you’re exposing your teeth to – and the foods and drinks that deliver the most nasty sugar. Hard candies and sugary gummy snacks are among the worst offenders, as they tend to stick to the teeth and exacerbate the sugar’s damage. And sodas are a “double dip” of damage, as they soak your teeth in both sugary water AND acids.

Drink Lots of Water… and Tea!  Water, of course, helps to rinse harmful residues from your teeth. But the benefits of tea may surprise you. Studies have shown that black tea can inhibit the growth of bacteria in the plaque on your teeth, making it a cavity buster you probably didn’t even know about!

All told, reining in your diet to protect your teeth doesn’t require much (if any) more effort and discipline than you’re already putting in for the sake of your overall health. By limiting the sugar and expanding the vitamins and minerals you expose your teeth to, you can take a huge step in reducing your dentist’s place in your everyday life!
